Very rare, first 1994 limited deluxe hardcover edition catalogue raisonné of American artist Bruce Nauman, published on the occasion of the major 1994-1995 touring retrospective that stunned critics by bringing together the full and largely underrated range of Bruce Naman's work, first held at Nuseo Nacioal Centro de Arte Rena Sofía, Madrid, before travelling to the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Beautifully produced, scarce French hardcover monographic volume dedicated entirely to reproductions of Surrealist visionary Hans Bellmer's incredible drawings. This is the very first edition, published by Éditions Denoël, Paris, in 1966. With an introduction by Constantin Jelenski. A stunning book, and a key title in the artist's oeuvre.

German artist Hans Bellmer (13 March 1902 – 23 February 1975), was best known for the life-sized pubescent female dolls he produced in the mid-1930s. "Bellmer was born in the city of Kattowitz, then part of the German Empire (now Katowice, Poland). Up until 1926, he'd been working as a draftsman for his own advertising company. He initiated his doll project to oppose the fascism of the Nazi Party by declaring that he would make no work that would support the new German state. Represented by mutated forms and unconventional poses, his dolls were directed specifically at the cult of the perfect body then prominent in Germany. Bellmer was influenced in his choice of art form by reading the published letters of Oskar Kokoschka (Der Fetisch, 1925)."

1967 German catalogue of German painter and printmaker, Otto Dix's "Paintings, Watercolors, Drawings, Prints", published to accompany the exhibition at Frankfurter Kunstverein, February 4—March 26, 1967. Illustrated with full-page reproductions in colour and b/w, a wonderful selection, with essay in German by German art historian Fritz Löffler. Full catalogue of exhibited works included. One of the most important artists of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), which also attracted George Grosz and Max Beckmann in the mid 1920s. Dix was noted for his ruthless and harshly realistic depictions of German society during the Weimar Republic and the brutality of war. A veteran haunted by his experiences of WWI, his first great subjects were crippled soldiers, but during the height of his career he also painted nudes, prostitutes, and often savagely satirical portraits of celebrities from Germany's intellectual circles. His work became even darker and more allegorical in the early 1930s, and he became a target of the Nazis, defining Dix as one of Germany's most 'degenerate' artists. Through his art, he had committed a 'violation of the moral sensibilities' of the nation and forced to promise to paint only inoffensive landscapes. His paintings that were considered "degenerate" were discovered in 2012 among the 1500+ paintings hidden away by the son of Hitler's looted-art dealer Hildebrand Gurlitt.

The second, expanded edition of this now highly-collectible, limited edition compilation of materials by and about New York art rock band Sonic Youth.

Compiled by Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo to accompany the exhibition of the same name at Printed Matter in the summer of 2000, Sonic Matters, Sonic Kollaborations is a sort of Sonic Youth super ‘zine, with over 220 photocopied pages including essays, interviews, ephemera, memorabilia, photographs, writings, gig flyers, posters, letters, song lyrics, poetry, angry fan mail, art work, record covers and related material. Includes a rambling, poetic essay by Moore on the Youth’s roots in–and ongoing relationship with–the art community, as well as the original exhibition proposals by curator, Todd Alden.

“Sonic Youth’s music explores the sometimes liberating, sometimes repressive + always complexx tensions between subjectivity + mass culture, sexuality + mass media, abjection and the star sy$tem. Rare copy of Jane Burton’s ‘It is Midnight, Dr.__’ is a small and exquisite limited edition cloth-covered book designed by Yanni Florence, published in edition of 50, numbered and signed. It contains 11 mounted original photographic prints (archivally mounted and interleaved with tissue) accompanied by an essay from Barry Humphries. Burton’s darkly seductive and morbidly thrilling images can be read as reverie or erotic fairytale. In a garden of stone we witness a female nude assuming postures of devotion and abandonment on the earth’s floor. Like an alabaster statue come to life, a somnambulist or someone bewitched, she appears to enact unspecified rituals. As always with Burton, we experience the artist’s preoccupation with flesh and stone; mortality and the eternal.

The BRUSEUM at the Neue Galerie Graz dared to create a confrontation whose intention was to recognize subtle harmony—alongside dissonance. Although the work of Günter Brus (born 1938) is not directly influenced by Max Klinger (1857–1920), both artists reference shared intellectual giants from art, philosophy, and science, such as Goya, Novalis, Nietzsche, and Darwin. A shared interest in human existence provides a foundation for related thematic questions. A discontinuity in the thematic structure of Klinger's graphic cycles, which leads to a constant redirection of the narrative direction, finds a parallel in Günter Brus's pictorial poems, which are based on the autonomy of the individual prints and autonomous, at most associative, image and text passages. Only drawing and printmaking, which Klinger called "pen art," seemed suitable to him not only to illustrate external reality but also to capture the "inner gaze." The resulting "dual vision" is capable of connecting reality with the irrational and lending poetry to the representation. The accompanying catalogue, featuring selected prints by Günter Brus and Max Klinger from the collection of the Neue Galerie Graz, also explores their affinity in terms of their essential nature, with texts by Anke Orgel and Birgit Prack.

Rare first edition, first printing of Eikoh Hosoe's classic photo book “Human Body”, published by Nippon Geijutsu Shuppansha, Tokyo in 1982. A stunning collection duotone photogravures, “Human Body” is a gorgeously designed retrospective of Hosoe's inimitable nudes and includes work from his critically acclaimed "Man & Woman", "Embrace", "Killed by Roses", as well as many previously unpublished images including many shot in Yosemite and Arizona. Beautiful black cloth bound, de-bossed covers with dust-jacket housed in the original heavy publisher's printed slipcase. An absolute classic, and wonderful copy of one of Hosoe's scarcer books.

Eikoh Hosoe (Hosoe Eikō, born 18 March 1933 in Yonezawa, Yamagata) is a Japanese photographer and filmmaker who emerged in the experimental arts movement of post-World War II Japan. He is known for his psychologically charged images, often exploring subjects such as death, erotic obsession, and irrationality. Through his friendships and artistic collaborations he is linked with the writer Yukio Mishima and 1960s avant-garde artists such as the Butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata.

First 1971 edition of Eikoh Hosoe's celebrated work "Embrace", published by Shashin Hyoronsha Publishing House. 6 years later it would be republished in the collection of Japanese photographers by Asahi Sonorama. This beautiful oversized original hardcover edition by legendary Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe, builds upon the approach of his much celebrated earlier project, Man and Woman (1961). Featuring a preface by Yukio Mishima, "Embrace" is a wonderful collection of photographs of human bodies studio shot in abstract detail using high exposure, Hosoe creating dramatic contrasts that emphasise the dynamism and physicality of these bodies that have become some of his most iconic images. Rich black and white gravure printing, a gorgeous book.

Volume 3 of the first ever book collection bringing together over 160 pages of the the original series from the early 1990s, in the original Japanese language, as they appeared in the pages of Kubo Shoten's Young Lemon magazine for the first time as "Bondage Fairies". Includes colour artwork galleries.

Created by manga artist Teruo Kakuta under the pen name "Kondom", a multilingual pun, meaning "little insect" in Japanese and "condom" in English, Bondage Fairies is an erotic series about highly sexual female forest fairies, who work as police officers protecting the forest, whilst engaging in a wild array of anthropomorphized, inter-species sexual acts. The series began in Japan in 1990 as Insect Hunter, but it was quickly banned from sale by the Tokyo Metropolitan Ordinance. Under a new title, the manga was serialized in manga magazine Lemon Kids. The series is among the earliest sexually explicit manga (eromanga) commercially translated and published uncensored in the United States where the earliest editions date from 1994 (Venus Press). Eros Comix subsequently published a multi-volume series of the collected Bondage Fairies, and subsequent stories, now all very collectible. Translated to Swedish, German, French, and Italian, Bondage Fairies is one of the most popular underground adult Japanese comics outside Japan.

Signed, first edition of this wonderful, now out-of-print and hard to come by, compact and sturdy publication designed by Satoshi Machiguchi and published to accompany the large-scale retrospective exhibition of Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama, “Moriyama Daido’s Tokyo: Ongoing”, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, June 2 – September 22, 2020.

Printed on warm paper and packed cover-to-cover with full-bleed reproductions of all the works in the exhibition, starting with his iconic "Tights" photographs and the repetitive image of the lips inspired by Warhol from his "Nippon Gekijo Shashincho / Japan, A Photo Theater", sampling some of his most recognisable early works, the book focuses on the theme of Tokyo seen through the never-restless lens of the Japanese master photographer. In addition to a foreword by Daido Moriyama, the book also contains essays by writer Akiko Otake and photo critic Yoshiaki Kai, shedding light on Moriyama’s photographic practice and his legacy (all texts included in Japanese and English translation).

"Known as a master of snapshots, Moriyama Daido, one of Japan’s preeminent photographers, began his career in the 1960s. His grainy, high-contrast style, which came to be described as “are, bure, boke” (rough, blurry, out of focus), sent shockwaves through the photography world. Over the years, Moriyama has held large exhibitions at museums in a host of different countries, and received countless international photography prizes, including the 2019 Hasselblad Award, and today, 55 years after his debut, he remains active at the forefront of the art world.

Toshio Saeki (1945—2019) was an illusive Japanese illustrator and painter, and icon of 1970s Tokyo counterculture, known for combining Japanese folklore, Yōkai spirits and elements of Western art with his own sophisticated aesthetics to create a unique, sensational world of eros, dark humour, and horror. Given the title “Erotic Engineer” by Timothy Leary, Saeki's provocative art broke all sexual taboos, questioned Japanese ideology and traditional views on love, desire and gender roles. Saeki’s surgically-precise graphic work is closely related to the Japanese cultural phenomenon ‘Erotic, Grotesque, Nonsense’ (ero, guro, nansensu).

Rare first 1970 edition of MoMA's landmark book on conceptual art, published to accompany this groundbreaking avant-garde show.

In the summer of 1970, the Museum of Modern Art in New York mounted the now legendary exhibition Information, one of the first surveys of conceptual art. Conceived by MoMA’s celebrated curator Kynaston McShine as an “international report” on contemporary trends, the show and attendant catalog together assembled the work of more than 150 artists from 15 countries to explore the parameters and possibilities of the emerging art practices of the era. Noting the participating artists’ attunement to the “mobility and change that pervades their time,” McShine underscored their interest in “ways of rapidly exchanging ideas, rather than embalming the idea in an ‘object.’” Indeed, much of the work in the exhibition engaged mass-communications systems, such as broadcast television and the postal service, and addressed viewers directly, often encouraging their participation in return.

The catalog, rather than merely document the show, functioned autonomously: it included a list of recommended reading, a chance-based index by critic Lucy Lippard, and individual artist contributions in the form of photographic documentation, textual description, drawings and diagrams—some relating to work in the exhibition and others to artworks as yet unrealized.

The British-born artist Leonora Carrington (1917–2011) is one of the more fascinating figures to emerge from the Surrealist movement. As both a writer and painter, she was championed early by André Breton and joined the exiled Surrealists in New York, before settling in Mexico in 1943. The magical themes of Carrington’s otherworldly paintings are well-known, but the recent discovery of a suite of tarot designs she created for the Major Arcana was a revelation for scholars and fans of Carrington alike. Drawing inspiration from the Tarot of Marseille and the popular Waite-Smith deck, Carrington brings her own approach and style to this timeless subject, creating a series of iconic images. Executed on thick board, brightly coloured and squarish in format, Carrington’s Major Arcana shines with gold and silver leaf, exploring tarot themes through what Gabriel Weisz Carrington describes as a ‘surrealist object’. This tantalising discovery, made by the curator Tere Arcq and scholar Susan Aberth, has placed greater emphasis upon the role of the tarot in Carrington’s creative life and has led to fresh research in this area.

The Tarot of Leonora Carrington is the first book dedicated to this important aspect of the artist’s work. It includes a full-size facsimile of her newly discovered Major Arcana; an introduction from her son, Gabriel Weisz Carrington; and a richly illustrated essay from Tere Arcq and Susan Aberth that offers new insights ­—­­­ exploring the significance of tarot imagery within Carrington’s wider work, her many inspirations and mysterious occult sources.

Giger's universe of the grotesque fantastic. 15 large-format reproductions, including never before published works, his hommage to Gustave Moreau, his Biomechanoids and Biomechanical Landscapes, designs for the unreleased films "The Tourist" and Jodorowsky's "Dune". First 1966 English-language edition of this huge monograph by Hieronymus Bosch (1450—1516) authority de Tolnay, the definitive work on the fifteenth-century Dutch/Netherlandish artist, containing not only a full introduction to Bosch's life and work, but a complete catalogue raisonné of all his paintings and drawings, including fold-out panels.

Hieronymus Bosch (1450—1516) was a Dutch/Netherlandish painter from Brabant. He is one of the most notable representatives of the Early Netherlandish painting school, his work, generally oil on oak wood, mainly contains fantastic illustrations of religious concepts and narratives. His pessimistic fantastical style cast a wide influence on northern art of the 16th century, with Pieter Bruegel the Elder being his best-known follower. Within his lifetime his work was collected in the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain, and widely copied, especially his macabre and nightmarish depictions of hell. Little is known of Bosch's life. He spent most of it in the town of 's-Hertogenbosch, where he was born in his grandfather's house. Today, Bosch is seen as a hugely individualistic painter with deep insight into humanity's desires and deepest fears. Attribution has been especially difficult; today only about 25 paintings are confidently given to his hand along with eight drawings. About another half-dozen paintings are confidently attributed to his workshop. His most acclaimed works consist of a few triptych altarpieces, including The Garden of Earthly Delights.

The landmark, over-sized Obliques special double issue, "La Femme Surréaliste", published in Paris in 1977. The French literary journal Obliques (who published special issues on Artaud, Bellmer, Kafka, Klossowski, Vian, Sartre, Robbe-Grillet, Strindberg, Genet...) was the first publisher to present a comprehensive list of the literary and plastic production of Surrealist women with this gorgeous volume, long before the works of surrealist women, as a corpus, began to be more widely studied in the 1980s. Featuring well known names, but also many female artists neglected and seldom mentioned in the recent (strangely narrow-minded) re-evaluation of this period, this beautifully printed issue of Obliques is an incredibly valuable reference on a movement that was decidedly ‘feminine’. Extremely rare early Paul Thek Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam catalogue, published in 1969. Designed by Wim Crouwel (Total Design) in the form of a 10-page illustrated leporello fold-out of Thek's installations and sculptures and published with SM no. 460. One of the hardest of all Stedelijk Museum catalogues to find, this copy comes complete with the often missing SM biographical/interview/text insert, and also the loose strip inlay with text advertising ‘a document made by Paul Thek and Edwin Klein’ (published that same year), making it a most complete copy available.

An American sculptor, painter, and installation artist, Paul Thek (1933-1988) is primarily known for hyper-realistic works of human body parts executed in fleshlike beeswax and for his strongly symbolic, room-size installations constructed from transitory materials. A major figure on the 1960s New York art scene, Thek also spent time in Europe, where he paved the way for artists adopting collaborative strategies. Although he gained a large following and was featured in more than one hundred solo and group exhibitions, the anti-establishment "artist's artist" was practically forgotten at the time of his death from AIDS related illness in New York City in 1988, aged 54.
