Put together in the wings of the “Dystopia” exhibition at the CAPC musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux, acting as a resonance chamber, this illustrated novel raises the issue of possible futures in the form of a critical fiction, and involves the outposts of the novel to come. About New Dystopia, the city in which the novel’s protagonists live, the narrator states: “As an American … one only came to New Dystopia City to become an artist. That only there was it a way of life.” According to von Schlegell, we are living in that new metropolis. He states, “Dystopia is today.”
After Venusia (2005) and Mercury Station (2009), both published by Semiotext(e), New Dystopia is Mark von Schlegell’s third novel.

Emerging from the eponymous exhibition at Portikus in Frankfurt am Main, Flaca / Tom Humphreys reflects on the London exhibition space, Flaca, that Tom Humphreys organized between 2003 and 2007. Humphreys developed an exhibition that made no pretense to offer an illustrative or historically accurate representation of his activities at the time, instead turning the space into a distorted double set in the present. Humphreys is interested in questioning the activities of that time; some of the artists he invited for this exhibition, for instance, never showed at Flaca. As Christian Egger writes in the catalogue: “Exhibiting there often meant that you could look with a fresh eye at the first solo shows in London of artists you’d only just seen at Flaca, and that was all really quite exciting, as though you were experiencing a little bit of what the mobile phone you’d brought along had gone through when you first scared it by charging it with island juice, there was somehow a different energy—a flirtation with malfunction.” The catalogue compliments the energetic, engaged style embodied by both Flaca and the reflective exhibition.

Since the mid-1990s, Sergej Jensen (born in Copenhagen in 1971) has been offering one of the most remarkable responses to the question of what painting can still be today. Painting in the classical sense plays only a minor role: in lieu of canvas, Jensen uses jute, coarse cotton, and jeans. He incorporates spots on fabrics which turn the “expressive gesture” of his paintings into a sign of wear from real life. Jensen sews fabrics together leaving the seams visible to evoke the fleeting impression of a drawing and he colors others with gouache, acrylics, and markers, but Jensen more often applies materials foreign to painting, such as patches, paper money, spices, beads, and glitter. Hanging his fabrics from windows, Jensen lets the sun and rain contribute a patina and treats them with chlorine and paints mixed with bleach to reduce their brilliance.
Jensen’s paintings are always at the edge of the abyss, but they do not fall in. Their brokenness is compensated by delicate sensual gestures—their decay and dirt, by an almost decorative beauty. Jensen operates within the narrow range between authenticity and fake, between punk and pose.
