World Food Books is a book shop in Melbourne, Australia.
Founded in 2010, World Food Books is a book service dedicated to the presentation of a rotating, hand-selection of quality international art and design journals, artists’ monographs, exhibition catalogues, artists’ editions, collected writings and printed ephemera.
Presenting new titles alongside rare and out-of-print publications spanning the fields of contemporary art, modern art, cultural theory, photography, film, poetry, fiction, fashion, architecture, interior design, typography, illustration, politics and much between, World Food Books wishes to encourage active and thoughtful reading, looking, writing, publishing, and exchanging of art and design press, both contemporary and historical.
As well as our book shop, located in Melbourne's historical Nicholas Building, all of our inventory is available internationally via our online mail-order service. We also have outposts at MUMA (Monash University Museum of Art) and Westspace, both also in Melbourne.
World Food Books semi-regularly co-ordinates "Occasions", a program of exhibits and events at the bookshop and in partnership with other hosts (such as museums and art galleries) that develop out of the activities, relationships and content of the bookshop itself.

B.Wurtz works from a basement studio in his home on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
This local fact is attested to by the plastic shopping bags and newsprint circulars that appear in his work. As formal objects, they don’t make loud claims about their origins but nonetheless transmit street addresses and places of business from the bottom of this long thin island. Like plenty of artists, Wurtz is affected by what is local and what is consumed. His work is underpinned by this ethic. It often speaks from a neighborhood or reads like the contents of a hamper:

Most of the work in this exhibition was made while the artist was in residence at Dieu Donne, a workshop dedicated to paper craft in Midtown. Here Wurtz fabricated assemblages with paper and objects that are relatively lightweight, with the intention that they would be easily transportable to Australia. This consideration isn’t absolute in Wurtz’s work, but was prescriptive for making the current exhibition light and cheap. Packed in two boxes, these works were sent from a USPS post office on the Lower East Side and delivered to North Melbourne by Australia Post.

World Food Books, in conjunction with the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival 2014, presented the Autumn Projects archive, consisting of a selection of early examples in Australian fashion with a particular interest in collecting designers and labels from the period beginning in the 1980’s, who significantly influenced the discourse of Australian Fashion.
Curated by Liza Vasiliou, the exhibition provided a unique opportunity to view pieces by designers Anthea Crawford, Barbara Vandenberg, Geoff Liddell and labels CR Australia, Covers, Jag along with early experimental collage pieces by Prue Acton and Sally Browne’s ‘Fragments’ collection, suspended throughout the functioning World Food Books shop in Melbourne.

Paul Taylor (Melbourne, 1957–7 September 1992) was an Australian art critic, curator, editor and publisher. In 1981, he founded Art & Text, the contemporary art journal considered to be responsible for generating and promoting postmodernist discourse in Australian art.

Scarce catalogue published to accompany the two-person exhibition "Exhibition 7 : In The Labyrinth : drawings by Peter Booth and Mike Brown", a traveling exhibition across regional galleries in 1980-1981. Catalogue is split in two with 20 illustrations of works by each Australian artist, in black and white and colour. Includes an introduction and biography for each artist.
Peter Booth (born 2 November 1940 in Sheffield, England) is an Australian figurative and a surrealist painter, and one of the key late-20th-century Australian artists. His work is characterised by an intense emotional power of often dark narratives, and esoteric symbolism.
Mike Brown (1938-1997) was a significant late 20th century contemporary Australian artist. One of the founders of the Annandale Imitation Realists of the early 1960s, now recognised as a key event in the development of anti-formalist art in Australia. Brown was a unique leader of alternative avant guard art in Australia, railing against elite art cliques. In 1965 Brown became the only Australian artist ever to be prosecuted for obscenity and scandals would continue even after his death in 1997. During his lifetime, Brown produced a multiplicity of work including naïve landscapes, pattern based abstraction, pop and text paintings, found object assemblages, graffiti, performance.

Rare and very collectable first edition of this iconic catalogue produced in 1968 to accompany "The Field", regarded as a landmark exhibition in Australian art history – a radical showcase of 74 abstract and conceptual, colour field, geometric and hard edge artworks. Influenced by the American origins of abstract art, the exhibition opened to much controversy at the NGV in 1968 with its silver foil-covered walls and geometric light fittings, boldly launching the careers of a generation of young Australian artists including Sydney Ball, Peter Booth, Janet Dawson and Robert Jacks. It was the first the NGV staged in its new Swanston Street galleries.
Handsomely designed with its wrapped, french-flap, die-cut cover, the book includes profiles on each exhibiting artist in the exhibition, including colour and black and white reproductions of all 72 of the works exhibited.
On the occasion of its 50th anniversary the NGV will restage the exhibition as The Field Revisited, opening in May 2018 at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia.

Art & Text, one of the landmark contemporary art magazines of the 1980s and 1990s. Monochromes was the first major survey in Australia of artists working with a single colour. It presented artworks produced over the previous 35 years by more than 45 Australian and foreign artists who have exhibited work of this nature in Australia. The approach adopted involved selecting one work by each artist and grouping them by colour. And rather than including only artists who might be considered 'hard-core' exponents of the painted monochrome, a more expanded view of monochromatic practice was embraced, one that acknowledged critical shifts in contemporary practice since the 1960s, with numerous conceptual and post-conceptual works presented.
A substantial catalogue, with an introduction by David Pestorius, commissioned essays by Andrew McNamara (QUT) and Morgan Thomas (UQ), and comprehensive installation view photo-documentation, was produced in the immediate aftermath of the exhibition.
